California Proposition 60 & Proposition 90

Question:   I am a senior citizen and have been thinking about selling my home and moving into a smaller home or townhouse.  I am concerned about paying the higher property tax rate.  I have heard there is a law that would allow me to keep my present tax rate.  Is this true and if so I would like more information on this.

Answer:  You are correct.  I will send you the full information, but because there are other seniors in the Los Angeles area that may have the same question, I will print the short version here.  You want to look into Proposition 90, enacted by voters of California in 1988.  Caution all counties did not adopt this propostion!  Proposition 90 allows eligible senior citizens relief from reassesment when purhasing a replacement home of equal of lesser value in a county which has adopted the provisions of the law.  Those participating counties will accept transfers of your Proposition 13 property tax base assessments from other California counties also.

TABLE I

Orange Ventura Los Angeles

Important:  Because of certain requirements, potential buyers should check with the tax assessor's office or other county authorities before proceeding!  Request information on both Proposition 90 and Proposition 60.  For Los Angeles County go to http://www.lacountyassessor.com/extranet/list/forms.aspx
